The Horses of Gentle Souls Horse Sanctuary
Reb is a 27 year old registered TWH with special needs. Her past included showing and endurance riding. In addition to scar tissue in several areas from injuries sustained before she came to us, caused by bad handling/training, she also has cushings, a structural issue with her throat and breathing issues which require a very strict mash diet and supplements/medication. Reb is in full retirement. Reb is our matriarch here at the sanctuary and we could not ask for a better protector or gentle disciplinarian for the herd. She has an amazing spirit, wild hair patterns and is a pleasure to have around.
Mama is approx. 34 years old and a TWH cross rescued from a killpen (destined for slaughter) in PA. After many years of hard work both riding and pulling a cart, she has a condition known as DSLD (Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Damage) This can be a painful condition, so here at the sanctuary Mama has regular corrective hoof trimming, supplements and linaments to ease her condition. Mama is in full retirement here at the sanctuary and was an owner surrender. As you can see, she is a beauty and is gentle in nature, manners and we are lucky to have such an affectionate horse here with us. Mama is Reb's best friend.
Annie is a 25+ year old Quarter Horse. She came to us as a starvation case. She was underweight, shaking and the lower half of her tail was matted beyond repair. Annie can be very fearful and requires calm and patient handling to help her overcome the bad memories she has. She has some arthritis, which is common in horses her age, and requires a joint supplement to help with her condition. Annie has been started in training to build her confidence and teach her that not all humans will be cruel to her. She is extremely intelligent and when she feels comfortable is very affectionate and sweet. See Annie's before pictures on our before and after picture page.
Dusty is approx 20+ years old and is an appy pony. He was previously used for many years as a childrens pony ride pony, but since Dusty now has some vision impairment, this makes him a special needs pony. He can be skittish due to his vision issues, so patient handling with Dusty is essential. He has a wonderful character, is quite the ladies man, being the only gelding in the herd. Everyone who meets Dusty wants one just like him. Dusty was an owner surrender/long term foster and is in full retirement here.
Tuffy is approx 23 years old and is a gorgeous, big sweet gelding. Tuffy was formerly a therapeutic riding horse, teaching children to ride, being painted and loved on by scores of families, BUT, Tuffy was then given to a "rescue" organization that sadly was not giving any of their horses the care they needed to stay fit and healthy.....Tuffy almost died from starvation and an extreme case of hook worms. Luckily we found him in time and Tuffy was rehabilitated and went on to make a full recovery! Tuffy LOVES people despite his ordeal, he always enjoys being scratched and his favorite things to do are eat and roll! See Tuffy's before picture on our before after page.
Penny is in her 20's and is currently in permanent foster for us. Formerly a child's mount, Penny is one of the sweetest horses you'll ever meet. She is quirky (LOVES to throw her bowl out of the stall once she's done eating) loves to be groomed and is a generally lovely little mare to be around. See Penny's before picture on our before and after page.
